Police Service Commission to address Policemen, SARS’s excesses

The Police Service Commission has waded into the ongoing saga posed by Policemen attached to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) saying it would not allow any officer soil the image of the Nigeria Police.

The Commission also vowed to address the excesses of the other Squads and tactical units attached to the office of the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

The announcement by the PSC, is on the heels of a directive by the IGP, to senior Police officers requesting them to compile cases of abuse of power and indiscipline by the rank and file and forward same to the Force Headquarters latest by Friday.

According to a statement on Wednesday by its spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC acknowledged the different measures announced by the IGP to reduce the nefarious activities of SARS and promised to henceforth, sanction any errant officer.

In the statement titled, “FSARS outcry: PSC to sanction deviants, rolls out contact information for citizens,” the agency said it would observe the activities of Policemen and discipline erring officers if found guilty of committing a crime.

The statement reads, “The commission will henceforth, closely monitor the activities of these officers and will not hesitate to punish deviants who may want to continue in their old habits. The commission will not allow these few outlaws to tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police Force.”

“The Police Service Commission has the constitutional mandate to discipline, dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over officers in the Nigeria Police Force except for the Inspector-General of Police. This mandate, it will discharge without fear or favour.”
