Police PRO: Video showing Police brutality an attempt to spoil Police image

Reacting to a video trending online, where an officer was attempting to arrest an unidentified suspect in the Igando area of Lagos, the Police in Lagos State while discrediting the video and the person who posted it said the video was an attempt to give the Nigeria Police Force a bad image.

SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer of Lagos State Command, in a statement on Tuesday said that the video was a calculated attempt to discredit the efforts of the Police in maintaining law and order in the state.

Adejobi while addressing newsmen said that Inspector Stephen Inumanu, a Police offer attached to the Igando Police Station was the officer shown in the viral video, he said the officer was trying to apprehend a suspected hoodlum who was resisting arrest.

“Inumanu with two other team members were deployed on a routine Stop and Search duty on Sept. 18 at Isuti Road in Egan area, Lagos State.”

“The team sighted two nervous young men who took to their heels. They were chased and one Stephen Ade, 28, was arrested while his partner escaped with a micro wallet.”

“Ade, practically refused arrest as captured in the video but was subdued with the aid of members of the public using minimal force, without assault from the arm bearing Inspector,” Adejobi said.

Adejobi also said the video was carefully edited by the person who posted it online, he said the sender removed several clips which showed where the suspect hauled curses and insults on the officer in the presence of onlookers.

He, however, stated that the Police will continue to carry out their duties with humanity, diligence and respect for the rule of law and human rights.
